The Range Rover has stood as the quintessential luxury SUV ever since Land Rover pulled the covers off of the model in 1970. Back then, it was deemed as a luxurious alternative to Land Rover. That sentiment has stood the test of time, and a discussion on luxury SUVs today will always include the Range Rover.

The Land Rover was born out of desperation from a war-torn country where the message to industry in general, and carmakers in particular, was ‘export or die’… and a Rover big wig wanting to do some gardening! The MD of Rover was Spencer Wilks and whilst pondering the fi rst problem, his brother, Maurice had one of his own.

The 101 Forward Control or Land Rover 101FC was a vehicle produced by Land Rover for the British Army. It was never made available to the public. The vehicle was primarily produced to meet the Army’s requirement for a gun tractor, and was designed to tow a field gun (the L118 Light Gun) with a ton of ammunition and other equipment in the rear load space, giving it the alternative name of the Land Rover One Tonne. The vehicle was designed to be easily transported by air; the positioning of the 3.5 litre Rover V8 engine beneath and to the rear of the cab eliminates the bonnet at the front, making the vehicle more or less cuboid thus reducing unused space in transport aircraft. Of concern was the payload was rather limited and stability concerns, particularly when crossing an incline.

The first attempt to build a landrover with a significantly larger payload than a normal long wheelbase resulted in two seperate projects being engineered.
The first was the forward control, eventually put into production in 1962. This vehicle was developed to meet demands for increased payload capacity and off-road load carrying performance. Rather than design an entirely new machine, Land-Rover modified the existing long wheelbase chassis to have a sub frame mounted above the chassis rails to carry the truck like body. Some body components were shared with the normal control model, but the vehicle had a very different appearance to the conventional Land-Rover.
